Leftwich Has Surgery On Injured Ankle

Leftwich hurt Sunday

For the second time this year, second-string quarterback Joey Harrington is back to number-one on the Falcons depth chart.  This time it is because of ankle surgery to starting quarterback Byron Leftwich.  Head coach Bobby Petrino said Leftwich had two screws placed in the ligaments that will speed healing of the high ankle sprain the quarterback got in Sunday’s loss at New Orleans.  Petrino said he hopes Leftwich can return in a few weeks.  Harrington will be the starter in the meantime.  He assumed the starting role in the preseason when Michael Vick was arrested and later pled guilty to federal dogfighting charges.  The Falcons have a bye this week.
