Blank and McKay Had Better Get the Next Hire Right

Petrino

Let’s face it, Bobby Petrino was not, and likely never was going to be a very good NFL coach. Blame it on him for taking a job he had no business taking, or blame it even more on Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who seems to be throwing darts anymore when it comes to hiring coaches. Petrino was never a good fit for the Falcons, and it seemed like with everything negative that went on with that franchise over the past year, he was doomed from the start.

Long run, the Falcons will be better off that Petrino high tailed it back to the college ranks, and away from a franchise that simply needs a better and stronger leader. Right now there are not a lot of names that pop up that could take the Falcons and make them successful right away, but what needs to happen is Blank and GM Rich McKay both need to take their time, do plenty of research, and make a solid decision to try and get Atlanta back on track.

While the Falcons need a coach that needs to set some guidance and course for the franchise, they also need a coach that can relate to players of today, something Petrino almost refused to do. Case and point was the run-ins with DeAngelo Hall and Alge Crumpler this season. Hall is a head case, no doubt, but he’s also a great talent and the Falcons cannot afford to ship him off simply because he and the coach can’t get along. Now with Petrino gone, hopefully Hall can establish a better start with the new coach.

This is not to say that Petrino is totally at fault for the failure this year of the franchise. The Michael Vick fiasco would have set back any franchise. Problem was the backup plan for Vick, who during the summer no one thought would currently be sitting in a jail cell, was Joey Harrington. The former Lions and Dolphins QB is never going to be a top starter in this league again, and when the Vick thing went down and it became apparent he would not be in a Falcons uni, the team insisted that Harrington could get it done. They were wrong.

For now the Falcons fans will have to sit back and be patient with the course of the franchise. The biggest thing now is for Blank and McKay to get the next hire right and show the fan base that they are serious about putting a winning football team on the field at some point in the near future.
