Falcons Looking to Interview USC’s Carroll?

Carroll

You knew at some point this name would have to pop up when it came to vacant head coaching positions in the NFL – Pete Carroll. Yes, the name has finally surfaced, and it’s concerning the open coaching spot with the Atlanta Falcons, who sorely need an impact move to be made in the wake of what was a complete train wreck of a season in 2007. ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli is reporting today that the Falcons are after Carroll for an interview, and if it can be set up he and owner Arthur Blank could meet by the weekend.

Clearly reaching out to Carroll is a stretch, as he is nothing more than a VERY good college coach, but has not been nearly as successful in the NFL. He has had stints with the Jets and Patriots, but was not nearly as successful as his time at USC, as he went a combined 33-34 overall. With USC, he’s been as good as any coach in college football, going 76-14 in seven seasons, winning two national championships, and just wrapping up another solid season with a win at the Rose Bowl.

The Falcons are a mess, and would have to give Carroll the world just to come there. That won’t happen to the extent he might want as the team is set on hiring a coach and GM, as Rich McKay will step down from that role and become the teams full-time team president. After the recent disaster the team went though with Bobby “Quitter” Petrino, one has to wonder why Blank would even think to go back to that well again?

This past week the team reportedly had a good interview with Colts assistant coach Jim Caldwell, and word was the team was looking to bring in Eagles GM Tom Heckert to take the teams GM spot after an interview on Tuesday. Another possible coaching option the team has received permission to speak to is Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. While it’s rather unlikely that Carroll would want to leave his plush job with USC, the Falcons should remember recent history and stay within the pro ranks for their next head coach.
