Pats Director of College Scouting Dimitroff New Falcons GM

While it appeared that the Eagles Tom Heckertt was the front runner, the Falcons have gone in a different direction, as they have hired Patriots director of college scouting Thomas Dimitroff to be their next general manager. In the past week it looked as if Heckertt was going to get the spot, as he had a good interview with the team. Dimitroff though, seems to have more upside from what we’ve heard, and accoridng to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he has agreed in principle on a contract that he will sign later this evening.

The 40-year-old Dimitroff has worked for the past six seasons right under VP of player personnel Scott Pioli, giving him plenty of experience under one, if not the best in the game. Dimitroff was up for the Vikings GM spot two seasons ago, but got passed over for the position. He has also worked for the Browns, Chiefs and Lions as a scout. He started working in pro football working for the CFL and the World Football League.

Now the next thing on the Falcons list will be to hire a head coach. Dimitroff is going to be the man to get to make the hire, and it will be interesting to see who is the front runner for the job. It was also thought last week that Jim Caldwell, who had a good interview, was a solid choice. The “sexy” pick remains USC Coach Pete Carroll, but is still remains highly unlikely that he is going to take the position.
