Power Back in the Fold: Falcons Land Deal with RB Turner

Turner
The Falcons have the player they want in order to try and establish the new power running game that new coach Mike Smith wants to install.  Late Sunday afternoon the team announced they have agreed to terms with former Chargers running back Michael Turner.  The deal is worth $34.5 million over six years according to ESPN’s Michael Smith.  He will get $15 mil in guaranteed money.  Atlanta was the only place that Turner went to seeking out a new team after four solid seasons with the Chargers.

“We are pleased to be able to add a very talented running back and a player who has produced at a high level in this League when given the opportunity,” said Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff in a press release.  “We think he’s ready to take the next step and have a more prominent role in an offense and we are happy he decided that opportunity is going to be here in Atlanta.”

This is the player that the Falcons were targeting from day one, and by landing him now look for the team to say good-bye to veteran back Warrick Dunn, who may just end up retiring.  Turner last season with the Chargers ran for 316 yards in limited time with one score, but proved his worth in the playoffs when LaDainian Tomlinson went down with an injury.

For his career, Turner has run for 1257 yards on 228 carries and six TD’s.  He is a pound in between the tackles runner who can get those tough yards when the Falcons will need them, and he’s totally expected to get a majority of the carries for the first time in his career now with the Birds down South.
