The Future Starts: Ryan Gets the Nod at QB Friday

The Falcons will get a glimpse of their future on Friday, as the team announced today that high-profile rookie QB Matt Ryan will get the start when the team takes on the Titans at the Georgia Dome. Ryan has had some ups and downs so far in the preseason, and so far has completed 17 of 31 passes for 175 yards with one touchdown and one interception in two games.

“I think you just have to keep doing the same kinds of things you’ve been doing,” Ryan said today. “You can’t try to make it bigger than it is. It’s a good opportunity and hopefully I can perform well and we can perform well as a team. I don’t think you can try to make it more than it is.”

So far Ryan has come into the game as a backup, first when the team played the Jags two weeks ago, and then last week vs the Colts. Against Indy he threw a pick that was returned for a score. The team will also use QB’s Chris Redman, Joey Harrington and possibly D.J. Shockley.

Head coach Mike Smith said that Ryan will play the first half and possibly into the third quarter. It’s usually the third preseason game where players that will start the season play the most, and it will be interesting to see if with Ryan starting it means he may be under center openind day. “That’s exciting to get out there and to be able to go right away,” Ryan said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
