Baker’s Ailing Hip to Be Checked Out By Two Specialists

The Falcons are becoming more and more concerned with the hip injury to first round draft pick Sam Baker, and are going to send him to two hip specialists. He will not play in Sunday’s game on the road at Oakland, and coach Mike Smith says that he’s not sure when Baker will come back.

“We’ve aggressively treated it and it has not responded,” Smith said today. “Our medical staff suggested he goes and seeks other opinions. Like with all our players, we want to do our due diligence. Sam will be missing practice for the next couple of days getting his hip looked at.”

Baker did try to practice last week, and at first he seemed to be getting better, but then the injury flared up and he didn’t play in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles. “Sam is such a competitive guy that he wants to get back as quick as he can,” Smith said. “This is a 16-game season. It’s not a one-game season. We want to make sure we do what’s in the best interest of the player and the team for the long term.”
