Catching up with QB Coach Glenn Thomas

If Falcons’ QB coach Glenn Thomas has any reservations about his four man quarterback unit, he isn’t making them public in the hours leading up to Atlanta’s second preseason game tonight against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In an interview yesterday with the Journal-Constitution’s D. Orlando Ledbetter, Thomas talked about the three Atlanta backups striving for time behind Matt Ryan.

Chris Redman, Ryan’s top backup, has more league experience than Ryan and the other two backups combined.

“[Redman] just keeps improving everyday. [He’s] been around a long time. He knows defenses and what looks he will see,” says Thomas.

“He just has to continue to improve and get the ball to where it is supposed to be.”

Thomas adds that having some carry-over experience serves to help Redman, and perhaps more importantly help Redman help Ryan.

That’s especially true with a new offensive coordinator in Dirk Koetter calling plays this season. Redman, a veteran of nine NFL seasons, will be looked to as an aid to both starter and coordinator. That is, if he isn’t under center himself.

For the man currently third on the depth chart, a big year is in store. That’s John Parker Wilson, who in his fourth pro season, has run out of practice squad eligibility.

“Ultimately it’s a big year for everybody,” Thomas says. “That was a good week for him this week (against Baltimore.)”

If Wilson isn’t retained after the preseason, and the Falcons opt to replace his spot on the 53-man roster, Dominique Davis looks as if he’ll be Atlanta’s third option.

Thomas isn’t hesitant to praise Davis, despite an underwhelming game against the Ravens.

“Dom has done really, really well. He is a soft spoken guy. He doesn’t say a lot, he just kind of lays back and soaks in information.”

Not a bad idea when you have Ryan and Redman at your disposal.

“He seems to be on top of his stuff,” Thomas adds.

We’ll have another chance to see the quartet in action tonight, on national TV no less, when the Bengals head in to Atlanta.
