Falcons Come to Terms with Veteran DE Dwight Freeney

Dwight Freeney

The Falcons thought enough of their visit with longtime Colts DE Dwight Freeney to ink him to a deal, one that was official after the veteran chose to come play for Atlanta over the Bengals.

“We didn’t bring him here to coach,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday morning. “We brought him in to rush.”

The seven-time Pro Bowler visited both teams in May, while holding out hope that the Cardinals would reciprocate his interest in a reunion.

Signed off the street in mid-October last season, Freeney was a revelation in Arizona, using his trademark spin move to rack up a team-leading eight sacks in just 11 games. That campaign brought his total numbers to 119.5 sacks in 194 games over 14 seasons.

Freeney is 36 years old and there’s no doubt he’s not the same player he was when he was sacking quarterbacks in Indy, but if he’s still got some juice left and can get to the QB on a somewhat consistent basis, there’s a use for him on the Falcons defense.
