While Matt Ryan has been able to dominate the Lions over the course of his career, the Falcons may have huge issues scoring points Sunday in London when the two teams do battle.
Detroit (5-2) is surrendering an NFL-low 290.3 yards per game and ranks second in points allowed with 15.0, and the Falcons are reeling having lost four straight.
If they have one thing to lean on, it’s Ryan’s success against Detroit. He’s 3-0 against the Lions with a 108.5 rating.
The Falcons have a lot to improve on, as they were held to a season-low 254 yards of offense in last Sunday’s 29-7 rout at Baltimore.
“We have to play more consistent on offense,” said receiver Roddy White. “We’re not playing efficient football and it’s costing us right now.”
At 2-5 it’s now or never for the Falcons to get on track, put the past failures behind them, and find a way to put up points against one of, if not the best defense in the league.
In the loss to the Ravens, Ryan threw for 228 yards with a TD. The O-line has been awful like 2013, and Ryan has been sacked nine times in the last two games.
The Falcons lost another key piece in center Peter Konz, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. He was placed on injured reserve Monday, joining fellow linemen Joe Hawley, Lamar Holmes and Sam Baker.
“There are no excuses,” coach Mike Smith said. “You can talk about losing players, but everybody loses players. It’s got to be the `next man up’ mentality. The next guy up has to step in and do the job. We have to step up.”
It won’t be easy this week, as Detroit seems to be playing with a huge amount of confidence, and look for them to overcome the Falcons overseas.
